The lesson

Show your ROI formula and put the assumptions on sliders, so the reader can try to break your number.

The move

A 2003 budget case dated November 2002, rebuilt as a deck by Pitch Unfairly. One slide is headed "A marginal win cost New York 3.5 times what it cost us." It prints the formula "(Payroll - floor) ÷ (Wins - replacement)" and two sliders under "ASSUMPTIONS. CHANGE THEM.", with buttons to compare against NYY, BOS, TEX, NYM or MIN.

Why it works

  • Our readSliders for replacement-level wins and roster floor invite the reader to argue with an input rather than with the headline number.
  • Our readEarlier slides build the case in steps: a cost-per-win figure, a table of departures, and a two-player comparison showing "8.2x" cheaper per time on base.
  • Our readStruck-through options A and B beside a boxed, stamped option C show the rejected paths in the same view as the chosen one.

What not to copy

The figures are part of the story, so don't quote them as results. Keep the interactive model and the crossed-out alternatives, and use your own inputs.
