What is an AI design system?
An AI design system is your brand written so AI tools can follow it: exact colors, fonts and components, plus rules on when to use them. DESIGN.md is one open format for this.
What are brand guidelines for AI?
They are your brand rules in plain text an agent can read, instead of a PDF built for people. They should cover tokens, voice, approved claims and what is never allowed.
What is DESIGN.md?
DESIGN.md is an open format from Google Labs. It pairs YAML design tokens with Markdown sections that explain them. Its version is still alpha, so it may change.
What is a SKILL.md file?
SKILL.md holds instructions a Claude agent loads when a task matches. Put it in a folder under .claude/skills/ in your project, or under ~/.claude/skills/ for all your projects.
Will AI follow the file?
Not reliably, and nothing here checks. The file tells an agent the rules. It does not verify that the output followed them.
Why are there so many gaps?
A public read finds colors, font names and a few words. It cannot find your type scale, spacing, voice rules or claims. We mark those as gaps and never fill them in.
