The lesson

In a board deck, put the bad news in the title and the ask on slide two.

The move

A Pitch Unfairly rebuild titled "OPENING WEEKEND: BELOW PLAN." The cover lists six sections and a stamp: "PRE-READ. DO NOT LEAVE ON THE ISLAND." Slide two is "THE QUARTER IN THREE LINES. LINE THREE IS THE ASK." Later, a KPI table sits under "EVERY KPI AGAINST PLAN. EVERY KPI IS RED.", then a timeline, FRI 08:00 to SUN 06:30.

Why it works

  • Our readNaming the failure on the cover removes the suspense, so the rest of the deck can spend its space on the decisions.
  • Our readThe three-line summary highlights only the third line in yellow ("Three decisions from this board today. None of them is reopening."), which tells the reader where to look.
  • Our readPlan, actual, variance and a red status pill sit in one row per metric, so a reader can check the whole table at a glance.

What not to copy

Don't borrow the dark humor or the figures, which belong to the story. Keep the one-glance scorecard and the pre-read stamp on a deck meant to be read before the meeting.
