The lesson

Before a negotiation, show your anchor, target and walk-away on one scale, and write down what you do if there is no deal.

The move

A Pitch Unfairly rebuild. The cover reads "My report card is an opening offer." Slide three, "I want an A-minus. I walk away at a B.", plots Today, Walk-away, Target and Anchor on a D to A+ line, with a "BATNA, IF THERE'S NO DEAL" bar. Slide four flips "WHAT THEY SAY" to "WHAT THEY WANT".

Why it works

  • Our readFour labelled points on a single axis make the negotiating range readable at a glance.
  • Our readThe "Teachers argue positions. I negotiate interests." slide toggles between what a person says and what they want, turning the idea into a swap to try.
  • Our readA zone-of-agreement bar chart shows the deal opening once the other side's ceiling rises above the walk-away, which makes the case for creating value.

What not to copy

The grades, the teachers and the plaid are theater. Keep the anchor-target-walk-away scale, the BATNA line and the interests-versus-positions pairing for your own deal prep.
