The lesson

Announce funding by telling your near-failures, with the steps numbered and the early money stated, and let the raise be only the first line.

The move

The post opens with 'Deel has raised $300M at a $17.3B valuation', then a numbered story: an escrow idea that 'Nobody cared' about, recovering $7,000 of a $15,000 invoice, a YC batchmate from Sunsama whose feedback led to a contracts product, then Employer of Record and Payroll. It ends 'All good things start small and shaky', above a photo.

Why it works

  • Our readShort numbered lines make a long post easy to scan, and many steps end on a turn that points to the next one.
  • Our readSmall, unflattering figures ($1,000 earned on a collection, 290 contractors, $5,000 monthly revenue) set beside the later numbers make the growth easier to believe.
  • Our readThe recurring point, that customers said what their bigger problems were and the team listened, gives the story a product lesson, not just a founder tale.

What not to copy

Don't copy the numbered format for a story you can't back with real early figures. Keep the open: the headline fact first, then the honest low point behind it.
