The lesson

When asking an expert for time, quote their exact words back, name two mornings, and flag the size of your ask in a P.S.

The move

It cites a Quora answer and praises "common sense and empathy". It says the company is building an outbound email tool and wants to check its ideas against an expert's experience. The ask is "10 minutes next week on Mon or Thu morning"; the P.S. reads "Hope I'm not starting with too big of an ask?"

Why it works

  • Our readNaming the answer and the two tactics shows the sender read it, which a template can't fake.
  • Our readAsking to check ideas against the expert's experience puts his judgment in the lead, and the email never asks him to buy.
  • Our readOffering two named mornings gives him a yes-or-no choice instead of an open calendar question.

What not to copy

Don't paste the compliment if you haven't read the work. Keep the specific quote, the short time box and the P.S. that names the ask.
