# Fedora: brand book and build spec

A blue-led community brand: the Infinity f in its one-square-cornered bubble, a seven-hue palette that runs from Dark Fedora Blue through purple, magenta and orange to green, one hue per Foundation, Montserrat headlines over Open Sans copy, tinted 3D renders of the logo as backgrounds, and four hand-drawn mascots. A voice that says it plainly, invites everyone in and holds a hard line on free software.

From unfairly.ai/brand-guidelines/fedora, checked 2026-10-31. Unofficial study; not affiliated with Fedora.

Every value is labelled with where it came from: **published** (the brand says it), **observed** (measured or seen on its live site, with the date), **our reading** (inferred from the evidence) or **our recipe** (how we apply the system). Files beside this one: tokens.css, tokens.json (DTCG 2025.10), kit.json.

**Thesis (our reading):** Four values, one shape. Fedora's whole system is the Four Foundations made visible: the logo's bubble becomes the badge for each value, each value gets its own hue, and the spectrum of those hues is the palette. Blue anchors it, the other colors say which part of the community is speaking. Based on: From the guide: the Four Foundations badges share the logo's bubble and take Fedora Blue, Friends Magenta, Features Orange and First Green (p.5); the palette names its hues after the Foundations (p.15); chapters are tinted one hue each (p.1-26).

## Purpose

Mission: Fedora creates an innovative platform for hardware, clouds, and containers that lets developers and community members build tailored solutions for their users (paraphrase). (published; https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/)

Story: Fedora is a community project sponsored by Red Hat, which also owns its trademarks. Its features flow upstream and into other distributions, and its fast release cycle keeps it ahead (Fedora Linux 44 is current, 45 in beta as of 2026-10-30). The current identity is the Infinity design logo; the brand booklet was written by Jess Chitas in 2022 and revised in 2024, and the community mascots were redrawn by intern Lauryn Dake in 2021, with Colúr added for Flock in 2022. (published)

| Value | What it means in the work | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Freedom | We are dedicated to free software and content: free alternatives over proprietary or patent-encumbered code (paraphrase). | published: guide.pdf p.5 |
| Friends | We are a strong, caring community; anyone who shares the values can help, at any skill level (paraphrase). | published: guide.pdf p.5 |
| Features | We care about excellent software, built openly with upstream for everyone's benefit (paraphrase). | published: guide.pdf p.5 |
| First | We are committed to innovation: the latest stable, robust, useful free software (paraphrase). | published: guide.pdf p.5 |

## Fixed and flexible

Never changes:
- The Infinity f logo exactly as supplied: no adjusting, recoloring, rearranging, stretching, home-made variants or hats (p.11-13)
- One palette, the same on screen, web and print; CMYK values for professional print (p.14-15)
- Montserrat for titles, Open Sans for copy (p.18)
- The Four Foundations and their hues (p.5)
- Trademark attribution and ® on first mention (trademark guidelines)

The one thing that varies: Which Foundation hue leads. Blue is always the anchor (logo, ink); a piece may take magenta, orange, green or purple as its tint, the way each booklet chapter does, and may add a mascot. The guide sets no limit on how much color; it limits by rule (palette only, logo untouched).

## Positioning

- **Statement**: An innovative platform for hardware, clouds, and containers, built with love by you. (observed)
- **Category**: Free and open source Linux operating system and its community; a platform, not just a distribution (paraphrase). (published)
- **Audience**: Software developers and community members building solutions for their users, and everyone from home desktop users to enterprise customers (paraphrase of the Mission and First foundation). (published)
- **Problem**: Proprietary and patent-encumbered software trades users' control for short-term ease of use; Fedora believes the user should control their computing (paraphrase). (published)
- **Promise**: It's your operating system: the latest free software, stable and robust, with no ads and your data your own (paraphrase). (observed)
- **Differentiators**: Completely free: 100% free and open source, legally redistributable, with proprietary and patent-encumbered code kept out.; First to the future: the latest stable technology on a rapid release cycle, showing where the operating system is heading.; Upstream-first: features built with upstream projects, then adopted by other Linux distributions.; Community-built and backed by Red Hat: volunteers and Red Hat staff together; 'Backed by Red Hat' on Workstation.; Private by default on the desktop: free, no ads, your data belongs to you.
- **Alternatives**: Long-term-stability Linux distributions, which Fedora says serve a different need (paraphrase).; Proprietary operating systems, which Fedora aims to equal or exceed with free software (paraphrase).; Distributions that bundle proprietary or patent-encumbered components for short-term ease of use (paraphrase).; Non-free tooling in how-tos, such as VirtualBox where libvirt/KVM is the Fedora platform choice.

## Messaging

Boilerplate (published): The Fedora Project is a community of people working together to build a free and open source software platform and to share user-focused solutions built on it. In plain English: Fedora makes an operating system, Fedora Linux, and makes it easy to do useful things with it. The community shares four values, the Four Foundations: Freedom, Friends, Features and First. Fedora is sponsored by Red Hat.

Taglines:
- It's Your Operating System (Homepage hero H1, Montserrat 600, white on the blue gradient)
- Freedom. Friends. Features. First. (The Four Foundations, each set as a one-word label with a full stop inside its bubble badge)
- built with love by you (Close of the homepage hero lead line)
- The leading Linux desktop (Fedora Workstation headline on the homepage and Workstation page)
- Fedora always aims to provide the future, first. (Close of the First foundation)

They never claim:
- Never imply sponsorship, endorsement or affiliation by the Fedora Project or Red Hat where none exists.
- Never imply Fedora or Red Hat is responsible for a third party's products or services.
- Don't promise community support beyond what every user gets (OEM and appliance rules).
- 'Fedora Remix' only for remixes that include modified or non-Fedora materials, with the remixer's brand more prominent.
- Merchandise and swag with Fedora Trademarks need Council permission.
- Copr builds are not official; say so whenever you mention them.

## Voice

Tone words: Plain-spoken, Welcoming, Principled, Playful.

Traits:
- Plain-spoken, but not Dumbed down (our reading)
- Welcoming, but not Exclusive to experts (our reading)
- Principled, but not Dogmatic (our reading)
- Playful, but not Unserious about quality (our reading)
- Innovative, but not Unstable (our reading)

- Say what it is in plain words first: the guide's own 'What is Fedora?' gives the formal definition, then 'in plain English' it makes an operating system and makes it easy to use (p.4, paraphrase).
- Write as 'we' to 'you'. The community speaks as we; the reader is you (p.4, p.26).
- Lead with the people: Fedora 'is our people', not bits and bytes (Mission page, paraphrase). Contributors of any skill level are invited in.
- Freedom is a principle, stated plainly, but practical: the Magazine still covers popular non-free software where useful (Chrome is its example).
- Warm and a little funny where it helps the point: the purple DVDs story (p.14), no hats (p.13), Beefy's mustard progress bar (p.23).
- Short sentences, active voice, present tense, imperative instructions (Fedora Magazine writing guidelines).
- Fedora Linux is the operating system; the Fedora Project is the community (observed: homepage and docs use the names this way).
- Trademark rules govern how others write about Fedora: adjective use, exact spelling, no plurals or abbreviations. Fedora's own pages do use the possessive ("Fedora's mission").

Rules a copy check enforces:
- Sentence case headlines
- American spelling
- Write as "we", to "you"
- Say "allowlist / denylist", not "whitelist" or "blacklist"
- Say "primary / secondary (or primary / replica, active / standby)", not "master / slave"
- Say "Red Hat", not "Redhat" or "RedHat"
- Say "Copr, NVIDIA, Perl, ThinkPad", not "COPR" or "Nvidia" or "nVidia" or "PERL" or "Thinkpad"
- Use active voice and the imperative for instructions; watch -ing words, which usually signal passive voice
- Present tense unless describing actual future plans ('your program starts', not 'will start')
- Write clearly and use shorter sentences; cut weak forms of 'to be'. Clarity beats brevity when a longer sentence reads easier
- Italics for commands, package names and UI labels inside a sentence; never mix monospace into a proportional sentence; bold only for an extremely important phrase
- Use 'Fedora' in its exact form: never abbreviate, hyphenate, pluralize, make an acronym of, or combine it with other words or designs
- Third parties use the mark as an adjective ('Fedora Linux', 'Fedora Workstation'), never as a verb or possessive
- Third-party uses: the first or most prominent mention carries ®, plus the trademark attribution statement. Fedora's own homepage shows neither (observed 2026-10-31).
- 'Fedora Linux' for the operating system, 'the Fedora Project' for the community, edition names as 'Fedora Workstation', 'Fedora Server' and so on
- Software from Copr always carries a caveat that it isn't officially supported by Fedora infrastructure
- Prefer free software and officially packaged software in examples; use libvirt/KVM rather than VirtualBox, and Fedora-family distributions unless the point is cross-distribution

Their words: community, contributors, free, open source, upstream, innovative.
Never: whitelist, blacklist, master/slave, Redhat, RedHat, COPR, Fedoras (plural), FC / FDR or any Fedora acronym.

## Page anatomy

How Fedora's own landing pages are built, part by part (observed; https://fedoraproject.org/, 2026-10-31). A homepage pattern, not a brand law: follow it for landing pages.

**Announcement bar**
- summary: Not a top bar: a right-aligned pill inside the hero, between the channels row and the headline. Flush to the right edge, rounded on the left only.
- text: 🎉 Fedora Linux 45 Beta released! (party-popper emoji, a space, then the link)
- href: https://fedoramagazine.org/announcing-fedora-linux-45-beta

## Signature moves

### The Fedora bubble

Where: Logo container; Four Foundations badges (p.5); palette swatch chips (p.15); color ramp tabs and hex pills (p.16-17); typeface markers (p.19).
Do: A circle with one square corner, the logo's own container shape. In the logo the square corner sits bottom left; as badges and chips it is turned so the square corner sits top right. Filled flat with one palette color; white glyph or label inside. One bubble per item; never a second shape language beside it.
Don't: redraw the bubble with all corners round, stretch it, or put a hat on it (p.12-13).

### Four Foundations color coding

Where: The Four Foundations badges and every chapter of the booklet.
Do: Each foundation owns a hue: Friends Magenta #DB3279, Features Orange #E59728, First Green #79DB32; the Freedom badge is filled Fedora Blue #3C6EB4 though the palette names Freedom Purple #A07CBC. The booklet tints whole chapters the same way: blue intro and logo (p.1-9), orange do's and don'ts (p.10-13), magenta colors (p.14-17), green typography (p.18-19), violet characters (p.20-25).
Don't: switch colors inside the logo or stray from the palette (p.11-12).

### Tinted 3D bubble render

Where: Cover, contents, chapter openers and back cover full-bleed (p.1, 3, 4, 6, 10, 14, 18, 20, 26); header band on every content page.
Do: A render of floating 3D Fedora bubbles and infinity f's, duotoned in a single palette hue with a lighter wash of the same hue. Openers: full bleed, white Montserrat SemiBold title and light white body left aligned in the middle third. Content pages: the render as a top band about one fifth of the page tall (observed: band ends at 210 of 1053 px), white title bottom-left, then a white page. One hue per render.
Don't: mix two foundation hues in one render, or set text over the busy left side without the tint.

### Palette spectrum

Where: The Main Palette page (p.15); echoed by the ramps on p.16.
Do: One continuous vertical gradient running Dark Fedora Blue #294172, Fedora Blue #3C6EB4, New Fedora Blue #51A2DA, Freedom Purple #A07CBC, Friends Magenta #DB3279, Features Orange #E59728, First Green #79DB32. Each ramp on p.16 fades its hue from darkest shade to near white.
Don't: add hues outside the palette.

### Community characters

Where: Panda, Badger, Beefy and Colúr (p.20-24); usable in different projects.
Do: Hand-drawn, loose-line cartoon mascots with expressive poses. Panda: grey and black with glowing ears and nuclear-symbol belly (green, yellow or red). Badger: grey with dark mask and red sash, the Fedora Badges mascot. Beefy: hot dog whose mustard shows progress. Colúr: blue pigeon with a Freedom-to-First spectrum belly, the Flock mascot. One character per piece, matched to its context (Badger for badges, Colúr for Flock, Beefy for progress).
Don't: redraw them in a new style; use the published poses.

## Messaging: rules

The Four Foundations are the message architecture: Freedom, Friends, Features, First. The homepage adds ownership ('It's Your Operating System', 'built with love by you') and proof badges (100% free and open source, Digital Public Good, latest release number).

Why it works: Values the whole community already shares double as the brand's claims (p.4, our reading).

| | |
|---|---|
| Pillars | Freedom, Friends, Features, First (+ Yours on the web) |

- Lead with a Foundation; prove it with a project fact
- Keep claims inside trademark boundaries (no implied endorsement)
- Don't claim Fedora or Red Hat support for third-party products (trademark guidelines)

Real examples, to look at on Fedora's own pages (not for reuse):
- The Four Foundations: guide.pdf p.5

Sources: guide.pdf p.4-5, https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/, https://fedoraproject.org/

## Voice: rules

No voice guide, but a consistent voice in the published copy: formal definition then plain English, 'we' to 'you', warm, inclusive, a little funny, firm on free software. Editorial rules come from the Fedora Magazine writing guidelines: sentence case, short sentences, active voice, present tense, US English, inclusive terms, exact third-party names. Trademark rules govern how anyone writes the name.

Why it works: The community is thousands of volunteers; plain, welcoming language keeps the door open to people of any technical skill (p.4-5, paraphrase).

| | |
|---|---|
| Tone (our reading) | plain-spoken, welcoming, principled, playful |
| Spelling | US English |
| Headings | sentence case |

- Explain simply first: 'in plain English' (p.4)
- Write as we, to you (p.4)
- Sentence case headings; US English (Magazine)
- Active voice, present tense, imperative instructions (Magazine)
- Inclusive terms: allowlist/denylist, primary/secondary (Magazine)
- 'Fedora Linux' for the OS; 'the Fedora Project' for the community (observed)
- For third-party uses: ® on first prominent mention plus the attribution statement (trademark guidelines); Fedora's homepage carries neither
- Don't use 'whitelist', 'blacklist' or 'master/slave' (Magazine)
- Don't pluralize, abbreviate or turn 'Fedora' into an acronym (trademark guidelines)
- Don't write 'Redhat' or 'RedHat' (Magazine)

Not published: brand voice or tone guide; word list for marketing copy.

Real examples, to look at on Fedora's own pages (not for reuse):
- 'What is Fedora?' in formal then plain English: guide.pdf p.4
- The purple DVDs story: rules told with humor: guide.pdf p.14

## Logo: rules

One logo family: the Infinity f (a single infinity-stroke lowercase f) knocked out of the bubble, beside or above a rounded lowercase 'fedora' wordmark. Default is horizontal in New Fedora Blue on white. Variants: one-color black and white, vertical, vertical gradient mask, one-color vertical, and four dark-background versions shown on black tiles. Secondary marks: Fedora Remix (nine colorways), edition logos, Magazine logo, and app/team sub-logo templates.

Why it works: The logo appears on apps, web, shirts, booth cloths, banners and print; small changes compound across a huge community, so consistency is what lets it be taken seriously (p.6, paraphrase).

| | |
|---|---|
| Default | Horizontal, New Fedora Blue #51A2DA on white |
| Mark | Infinity f knocked out white from the bubble |
| One-color | Black #000000 or white #FFFFFF |
| Dark grounds | Four variants shown on black |
| Clear space | not published |
| Minimum size | not published |
| Files | SVG on fedoraproject.org; PNG on docs; masters on Design GitLab |

- Use the horizontal default logo wherever it fits; it's the preferred version (p.7)
- Use the vertical logo where the space is square or tall (p.7)
- On dark grounds use a dark-background variant or the one-color white (p.7)
- Use one-color black or white where color reproduction is limited (p.7)
- Get logos only from the official sources, never a search engine (p.10)
- Edition, app and team logos follow the published templates; request new ones via the Design team's GitLab (p.8-9; brand page)
- Fedora Remix only marks derived work, with your own brand more prominent (trademark guidelines)
- On community and business sites, any Fedora logo links to https://fedoraproject.org/ (trademark guidelines)
- Don't adjust any of the logos (p.11)
- Don't switch the colors, e.g. purple bubble with orange wordmark (p.11)
- Don't place the logo on a similarly colored background, such as New Fedora Blue on light blue (p.11)
- Don't rearrange elements, e.g. wordmark before the bubble (p.12)
- Don't stray from the palette, e.g. pure electric blue (p.12)
- Don't stretch or distort the logo (p.12)
- Don't make your own variant, e.g. a plain f in a bubble with a bold wordmark (p.13)
- Don't add a hat: 'We don't do hats either' (p.13)

Not published: clear space; minimum size; gradient-mask color stops; logo construction grid.

## Color: rules

Seven named main colors with RGB, CMYK, hex and Pantone: three blues (Dark Fedora Blue, Fedora Blue, New Fedora Blue) and four Foundation hues (Freedom Purple, Friends Magenta, Features Orange, First Green). Each, plus a neutral ramp from black to white, comes as a five-step ramp (p.16). A separate color-blind safe set of twelve is shown with protanopia, deuteranopia and tritanopia renderings (p.17). In use: blue leads (logo, text, cover), white is the page, and each chapter takes one hue.

Why it works: A single palette keeps artwork consistent across screen, web and print; past mistakes include Fedora DVDs printing purple, hence CMYK for print (p.14, paraphrase).

| | |
|---|---|
| Dark Fedora Blue | #294172 · RGB 41,65,144 · CMYK 100/57/0/38 · PMS 541 |
| Fedora Blue | #3C6EB4 · RGB 60,110,180 · CMYK 100/46/0/0 · PMS 2935 |
| New Fedora Blue | #51A2DA · RGB 81,162,218 · CMYK 88/20/0/0 · PMS 299 |
| Freedom Purple | #A07CBC · RGB 160,124,188 · CMYK 46/53/0/0 · PMS 2087 |
| Friends Magenta | #DB3279 · RGB 219,50,121 · CMYK 0/100/0/0 · PMS 226 |
| Features Orange | #E59728 · RGB 229,151,40 · CMYK 0/36/100/0 · PMS 130 |
| First Green | #79DB32 · RGB 121,219,50 · CMYK 60/0/100/0 · PMS 7488 |
| Ramps | 5 steps per hue, 6 for neutrals (p.16) |
| Color-blind safe | #51A2DA #294172 #AFEA85 #DB3279 #F5A326 #B193C8 #38BC3B #3C6EB4 #EB7434 #603E79 #FFD117 #AAD0EE (p.17) |
| Proportions | not published |

- Use only the palette: main colors, their published ramps, or the color-blind safe set (p.12, p.15-17)
- Use the CMYK values for professionally printed collateral and objects: banners, T-shirts, hats, stickers (p.14)
- Pantone references for spot color: 541, 2935, 299, 2087, 226, 130, 7488 (p.15)
- Text on white in Dark Fedora Blue; on tinted renders and dark blue, white (observed in the guide)
- Pick from the color-blind safe set when hue must carry meaning, such as charts (p.17; application is our reading)
- One Foundation hue per piece or section, with blue as the anchor (observed: chapter tints)
- Don't stray from the palette (p.12)
- Don't print from RGB or hex: blue comes out purple (p.14)
- Don't recolor the logo in a Foundation hue (p.11)

Not published: color proportions; contrast pairings or ratios; names for ramp steps; CMYK/Pantone for ramp steps and the color-blind set.

Do and don't:
- Do: "It's Your Operating System". White Montserrat on the Fedora blues: the homepage hero (observed 2026-10-31).
- Don't: "It's Your Operating System". Blue on blue: the guide bans the logo on similarly colored grounds.
- Do: "Learn More". New Fedora Blue button, white Open Sans: the edition-card CTA (observed 2026-10-31).
- Don't: "Learn More". Foundation hues are accents for campaigns and mascots, not the homepage's working CTA color (observed 2026-10-31).

## Typography: rules

Two open faces: Montserrat for titling and headlines (also the Editions logos), Open Sans for body copy, each shown in Light, Normal, Semi-Bold, Bold and Ultra-Bold with italics. The booklet sets titles in white or Dark Fedora Blue Montserrat SemiBold and running text in Montserrat Light, justified. fedoraproject.org uses Montserrat 600 for the 60px hero and Open Sans 400 for copy (observed).

Why it works: Both are openly licensed and freely distributable, which suits a free software project and its volunteers (p.18, paraphrase).

| | |
|---|---|
| Display | Montserrat, SemiBold 600 (site) · OFL |
| Body | Open Sans, Regular 400 · OFL |
| Weights shown | 300, 400, 600, 700, 800 + italics (p.19) |
| Sizes and leading | not published |

- Montserrat for titles and headlines (p.18)
- Open Sans for body text and copy (p.18)
- Edition, app and team names in uppercase Montserrat beside the logo (p.8-9)
- Sentence case for headings in editorial (Magazine guidelines)
- Don't swap in other fonts on Magazine featured images (Magazine guidelines)
- Don't set the wordmark in Montserrat: the 'fedora' wordmark is its own drawing (p.7, our reading)

Not published: type scale; line height; tracking; monospace face.

Real examples, to look at on Fedora's own pages (not for reuse):
- Typography recommendation: guide.pdf p.18
- Open Sans (orange bubble) and Montserrat (magenta bubble) weights: guide.pdf p.19

## Graphic elements: rules

Three recurring elements: the bubble shape (badges, swatches, tabs, markers), the tinted 3D render of floating logos (full-bleed openers, header bands), and pill-shaped hex labels nested under bubble tabs on the ramp pages. Chapter openers are full-bleed renders; content pages are white with a render band across the top.

Why it works: Reusing the logo's own shape and 3D-rendered logos as texture makes every page recognisably Fedora without adding new motifs (our reading).

| | |
|---|---|
| Bubble | circle with one square corner |
| Header band | about 20% of page height (observed p.5) |
| Render tint | one palette hue per render |
| Hex label | white pill with a colored outline (p.16-17) |

- Use the bubble as the container for badges, chips and markers, in one palette color with white content (p.5, p.15, p.19)
- Use a render tinted in one palette hue as a background or header band (p.1-26)
- Keep content pages white below the band (observed)
- Don't invent new container shapes beside the bubble (our reading of 'do not make your own variant', p.13)
- Don't combine several hues in one render

Real examples, to look at on Fedora's own pages (not for reuse):
- Four Foundations badges and header band: guide.pdf p.5
- Cover: logo on the blue-tinted render: guide.pdf p.1
- The untinted 3D render used behind chapter openers: guide.pdf p.11

Sources: guide.pdf p.1-26

## Iconography: rules

Only the Four Foundations pictograms: solid white glyphs (open hands for Freedom, two figures for Friends, gears for Features, a trophy for First) in their bubbles, labelled in bold uppercase with a full stop. The website uses Bootstrap Icons and Font Awesome (observed).

Why it works: One solid, friendly glyph per value reads at badge size (our reading).

| | |
|---|---|
| Style | solid white |
| Grid, stroke, sizes | not published |

- White solid glyph centered in a Foundation-colored bubble with the label below (p.5)
- Don't outline or multicolor the Foundation glyphs (our reading)

Not published: icon grid; stroke; sizes; icon library.

Real examples, to look at on Fedora's own pages (not for reuse):
- Foundation pictograms: guide.pdf p.5

Sources: guide.pdf p.5, https://fedoraproject.org/ (observed 2026-10-30)

## Illustration: rules

The community characters, mostly from the 2021 Fedora Characters Revamp: Panda (general mascot, once the 404/500 helper), Badger (Fedora Badges mascot), Beefy (general mascot, Fedora 17 release name, mustard as progress) and Colúr (Flock mascot, 2022, a pink-necked green pigeon). Loose hand-drawn line, flat fills, many poses.

Why it works: Mascots give the community a friendly face and in-jokes people share (Beefy 'became a meme', p.23, paraphrase).

| | |
|---|---|
| Characters | Panda, Badger, Beefy, Colúr |
| Style | hand-drawn line, flat color |

- Characters may be used in different projects (p.20)
- Match the character to its context: Badger for badges, Colúr for Flock, Panda and Beefy as general mascots (p.21-24)
- Use the published poses
- Don't redraw the characters in another style (our reading)

Real examples, to look at on Fedora's own pages (not for reuse):
- Panda pose sheet: guide.pdf p.21
- Badger pose sheet: guide.pdf p.22
- Beefy pose sheet: guide.pdf p.23
- Colúr pose sheet: guide.pdf p.24

## Photography: rules

The guide publishes no photography direction and contains no photographs; its imagery is 3D renders and drawings. The homepage uses edition marks and product imagery, no people photography in the fold (observed).

Why it works: Not published.

| | |
|---|---|
| Photography | not published |

- Prefer the tinted renders, edition marks and characters over stock photos (our reading)

Not published: photography style; subjects; treatment.

Sources: guide.pdf p.1-26

## Interface and layout: rules

The booklet is A4 portrait (observed from page size). Openers: full-bleed tinted render, left-aligned white title and text in the middle of the page. Content pages: a render band across the top fifth with the white title at its lower left, then white with Dark Fedora Blue Montserrat on a wide left margin. Web layout comes from the homepage anatomy step.

Why it works: A strong colored band per chapter tells the reader where they are; the white page keeps the rules readable (our reading).

| | |
|---|---|
| Format | A4 portrait (observed) |
| Header band | about 20% height (observed) |
| Grid, margins | not published |

- Header band plus white body for content; full-bleed render for openers (observed)
- Left-aligned titles (observed)

Not published: grid; margins; spacing scale; web components.

- Chapter opener layout: guide.pdf p.4
- Content page layout: guide.pdf p.9

Sources: guide.pdf p.1-26

## Rules: rules

The guide's hard rules are about the logo and color; the trademark guidelines add legal rules for any use of the name and marks.

Why it works: Red Hat must police the marks on behalf of the community, and the logo only works if it stays consistent (trademark guidelines; p.6, paraphrase).

| | |
|---|---|
| Trademark owner | Red Hat, Inc. |
| Overseen by | Fedora Council |
| Logo help | logo@fedoraproject.org |

- Use only official logo files, untouched (p.10-13)
- Use only palette colors; CMYK for professional print (p.12, p.14)
- Montserrat headlines, Open Sans copy (p.18)
- Community and business sites: link any Fedora logo to fedoraproject.org and state non-affiliation where required (trademark guidelines)
- Merchandise needs Council permission (trademark guidelines)
- Fedora Remix only for derived work, your brand more prominent (trademark guidelines)
- Third-party uses: exact trademark form, ® on first prominent mention, attribution statement (trademark guidelines)
- Unsure? email logo@fedoraproject.org or file a Design team ticket (p.26)
- Don't imitate Fedora's distinctive trade dress for a non-Fedora site without permission (trademark guidelines)
- Don't use Fedora in your own product, company or domain name (trademark guidelines)
- Don't use logos found on a search engine (p.10)

Real examples, to look at on Fedora's own pages (not for reuse):
- Trademark notice and credits: guide.pdf p.2

## Applications

| Format | What | Source |
|---|---|---|
| software and web | The logo is used across software applications and web sites; app and team logos follow the Design team's templates. | https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/brand/ |
| print and merchandise | T-shirts, booth tablecloths, banners and stickers, printed in CMYK so the blue doesn't come out purple. | https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/brand/ |
| derived work | The Fedora Remix mark labels content derived from Fedora, in nine published color variants. | https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/brand/ |

## By format

How our engine applies Fedora's system to each format. This is our recipe built from their rules, not something Fedora publishes. Level = how much Foundation color and render texture the format carries (0 plain blue-and-white, 5 full tinted render, multiple hues and a mascot). Loudness runs 0 (nothing but the essentials) to 5 (the signature moves at full volume).

| Format | Loudness 0–5 | Must appear | What varies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landing page | 3 | Build it the way fedoraproject.org is built (kit.spec.page from the anatomy step): blue gradient hero with the white horizontal logo top left, Montserrat 600 Title Case hero headline in white, Open Sans lead, New Fedora Blue / Fedora Blue / Dark Fedora Blue as the working colors, white or light sections below, the Red Hat sponsor bar at the foot of the footer (no trademark line on the homepage, observed 2026-10-31) | Which editions or sections appear; a Foundation hue as a section accent; a mascot in a supporting role |
| Slide deck | 3 | Section openers as a full-bleed render tinted in one Foundation hue with white Montserrat title; content slides white with Dark Fedora Blue type; horizontal logo, untouched | Which Foundation hue per section; bubbles as bullets or stat badges |
| Social post | 4 | One Foundation hue or brand blue as ground, white Montserrat headline, logo from official files, palette only | Mascot, render texture, which hue |
| Print and merchandise | 2 | CMYK or Pantone values only (p.14-15); official logo; Council permission for merchandise | Ground color and mascot |
| Event booth banner | 4 | Large horizontal logo on white or a dark-background variant on Dark Fedora Blue; CMYK print; Colúr for Flock events | Foundation hue band, render texture |
| Docs or Magazine article | 1 | Magazine writing rules: sentence case, US English, active voice; featured images from the provided assets and fonts only | Featured image hue |
| Team or app logo | 0 | Published sub-logo template: logo or bubble with the name in uppercase Montserrat, Dark Fedora Blue; requested through the Design team | Horizontal or vertical template |

## Checks before anything ships

- **Logo hidden**: Cover the infinity-f. It should still read as Fedora: a blue gradient field with a diagonal cut, white Montserrat Title Case headline, Open Sans copy, and the blue release circle.
- **Swap test**: Put another Linux distribution's logo on it. If the Fedora blues, the edition cards with their own marks and the plain, community-first copy don't feel out of place, it's generic, and it goes back.

## Make it your own

Keep the system: color roles and proportions, type, layout, components, the signature moves, the voice traits and rules. Replace everything that is Fedora's own: name and logo, positioning, pillars, proof, taglines, boilerplate and any real line quoted above. kit.json lists these under make_it_yours.

## Not published

- Logo clear space: not published

- Brand voice or tone guide: not published (voice rules come from the Magazine writing guidelines and trademark guidelines)
- An official tagline: not published (homepage lines are observed, not designated)
- Web components (buttons, cards, nav): not published in the guide; the anatomy step measures the homepage
- fedoraproject.org also uses colors outside the guide palette, e.g. Tailwind-style greys #374151 and #111827 and a lighter blue #60A5FA (observed in the measure step, 2026-10-30); the anatomy step decides how to record them

Logos and reference images belong to Fedora. Look at them on Fedora's own pages; don't reuse them.
